Bengaluru-based startup Nova Spectral AI has raised ₹21.15 crore to develop an indigenous short-wave infrared image sensor chip using quantum dot technology. The proposed sensor could help drones capture images in challenging lighting and visibility conditions, with applications in industrial inspection, surveillance and other imaging systems.

India’s Indigenous Imaging Technology Gains Momentum

India’s efforts to develop advanced imaging technology received fresh attention on October 27, 2026, when Nova Spectral AI announced a ₹21.15 crore seed funding round. The Bengaluru-based startup is developing a quantum dot short-wave infrared (SWIR) image sensor chip intended for drones, surveillance systems and consumer devices.

The funding round was led by Shastra VC, with participation from Equirus InnovateX Fund and angel investors, according to a report carried by PTI and published by Rediff.

The company aims to develop an alternative to imported infrared imaging components, which can be expensive and difficult to source for certain specialised applications. Its technology is designed to detect light in the short-wave infrared spectrum, which can reveal information that ordinary visible-light cameras may miss.

The project is still under development. Nova Spectral AI has indicated that it aims to produce a field-ready prototype within 18 months, meaning the proposed benefits should not yet be treated as proven performance in operational drones. <Cite refs={[“turn317252search2″,”turn317252search5”]}/>

What Is Quantum Dot SWIR Imaging Technology?

To understand the potential of this technology, it is useful to distinguish a quantum dot image sensor from a conventional camera.

Most standard digital cameras detect visible light reflected from objects. Their performance can deteriorate in darkness, haze and other conditions that reduce the amount or quality of visible light reaching the sensor.

Short-wave infrared imaging works with wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum, generally around 1,000 to 2,500 nanometres. Depending on the wavelength, sensor design and environment, SWIR cameras can capture details that are difficult to distinguish using ordinary cameras.

Quantum dots are extremely small semiconductor structures whose optical properties depend on their size and composition. In an image sensor, appropriately engineered quantum dots can absorb selected wavelengths of light and help convert them into an electrical signal that can be processed into an image.

Nova Spectral AI is developing a quantum dot-based SWIR sensor chip. The company says the technology could offer a domestic alternative for applications that currently depend on specialised imported components.

However, quantum dot SWIR imaging should not be confused with every technology described as quantum sensing. Quantum sensing also includes systems that use quantum properties to measure magnetic fields, gravity, time and other physical quantities with high precision.

How Advanced Infrared Cameras Could Help Drones

Drones are widely used for aerial photography, infrastructure inspection, agricultural monitoring and industrial operations. Their usefulness depends partly on the quality of the cameras and sensors they carry.

A conventional camera can provide clear images in favourable daylight conditions, but it may struggle when visibility declines. A SWIR camera could provide additional visual information in certain difficult environments.

1. Better visibility in haze and smoke

SWIR imaging can sometimes improve image contrast in haze, smoke or other conditions where visible-light cameras struggle. The result depends on the material, particle concentration, wavelength and distance.

For drones operating near industrial sites or affected areas, an additional infrared imaging channel could help operators interpret scenes that are difficult to assess using visible light alone.

However, SWIR does not guarantee clear images through dense smoke, and it cannot generally see through opaque walls. Performance must be tested under the specific conditions in which a drone is expected to operate.

2. Improved low-light imaging

Certain SWIR sensors can capture useful information under low-light conditions when suitable infrared illumination or natural infrared light is available.

This could support night-time inspections, infrastructure monitoring and selected security applications. The actual benefit will depend on sensor sensitivity, optics, available illumination and image-processing software.

3. Industrial inspection

Drones fitted with specialised cameras can inspect industrial equipment, power infrastructure and difficult-to-access locations without requiring workers to approach every site directly.

SWIR imaging may help identify differences in materials, moisture or surface conditions in suitable applications. These capabilities could complement visible-light and thermal cameras, although each imaging technology detects different properties and requires appropriate interpretation.

Agriculture and Disaster Management: Potential Civilian Applications

The potential applications of advanced drone imaging extend beyond defence and surveillance.

In agriculture, specialised imaging systems are already used to monitor crop conditions, identify variations in vegetation and support precision farming. SWIR wavelengths can be useful for studying water-related properties in plants and materials, depending on the sensor configuration and analysis method.

If domestic SWIR sensors become sufficiently affordable, they could expand access to specialised imaging equipment for agricultural technology companies and drone service providers.

For example, a drone operator working with farmers could combine visible-light images with infrared data to assess crop conditions across a field. The additional information would need to be interpreted using validated methods rather than treated as a direct diagnosis of crop health.

Disaster management is another potential area. Drones can help survey inaccessible locations after floods, fires and industrial accidents. Infrared imaging may provide useful information in some situations, but different sensors have different strengths.

Thermal cameras detect emitted infrared radiation and are commonly used to identify temperature differences. SWIR cameras detect reflected or emitted radiation within their operating range, depending on the system. They are not interchangeable.

A drone equipped with multiple imaging systems could give responders a more complete picture of an affected area, provided the equipment has been tested for the intended conditions.

Why Indigenous Sensor Manufacturing Matters for India

Advanced image sensors are important components in drones, robotics, autonomous vehicles, industrial equipment and certain defence systems.

When specialised components are sourced mainly from overseas suppliers, Indian manufacturers can face challenges involving cost, supply availability, customisation and long-term maintenance.

Developing domestic sensor technology could help reduce some of these constraints. It may also create opportunities for Indian semiconductor researchers, materials scientists, electronics manufacturers and software developers.

Nova Spectral AI’s funding is part of a wider effort by Indian deep-tech companies to build specialised hardware rather than relying exclusively on imported components.

Still, developing a sensor in a laboratory is different from manufacturing it reliably at commercial scale. The company will need to demonstrate consistent sensor performance, production quality, durability, competitive pricing and compatibility with existing imaging systems.

For drone manufacturers, the most important considerations will include image quality, size, weight, power consumption and operating reliability. A technically promising sensor must satisfy these practical requirements before it can become a viable commercial product.

What the ₹21.15 Crore Funding Will Support

The seed funding is intended to support Nova Spectral AI’s work on its quantum dot SWIR sensor technology, including team development and efforts towards a field-ready prototype.

The company has said it has received in-principle approval to incubate at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. It aims to reach the prototype stage within approximately 18 months.

This is a development target, not a confirmed commercial launch date. The timeline could depend on engineering challenges, testing results, manufacturing requirements and integration with the systems that would eventually use the sensor.

Investors in deep-tech hardware companies often finance research and development long before a product generates substantial revenue. Unlike many software products, specialised imaging hardware requires material development, fabrication, calibration and physical testing.

For Nova Spectral AI, the next significant milestones will be evidence that the sensor can deliver reliable SWIR imaging, followed by integration and validation in real-world applications.

The funding announcement establishes investor backing for the development effort, but detailed independent performance data and commercial deployment results will be needed to assess the technology’s eventual impact.

Key Takeaways

  • Nova Spectral AI raised ₹21.15 crore in seed funding on October 27, 2026, to develop an indigenous quantum dot SWIR image sensor.
  • The technology could help drones capture additional visual information in certain low-light, hazy or smoke-affected environments, depending on operating conditions.
  • Potential civilian applications include industrial inspection, agricultural monitoring and disaster assessment, although performance must be validated for each use.
  • The company is targeting a field-ready prototype within 18 months, so widespread commercial availability and real-world performance have not yet been established.

Frequently Asked Questions
