Punjab is observing a statewide bandh today, August 21, with the shutdown scheduled from 7 am to 2 pm. The call has been issued by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha over demands concerning Sikh prisoners and parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, with transport, markets and educational institutions facing disruptions.

Punjab Bandh Today: Timing And Main Demands

The Punjab bandh is being observed across the state from 7 am to 2 pm on Friday, August 21. The shutdown has been called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, with organisers seeking the release of Sikh prisoners, particularly those they say have completed their sentences, as well as parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara on humanitarian grounds.

The bandh follows protests and demonstrations linked to these demands. Organisers have appealed for the shutdown to remain peaceful and have asked people to cooperate with commuters and essential-service workers.

The call has the potential to affect daily life across Punjab because the seven-hour window overlaps with morning school, college and office travel. Roads, public transport and commercial establishments are among the areas expected to experience the biggest impact.

Authorities have also increased security arrangements at several locations, including important urban and intercity routes.

Public Transport And Road Travel May Face Disruptions

For commuters, transport is likely to be the most immediate concern during the Punjab bandh.

The bandh organisers have called for buses and other regular public transport services to remain off the roads during the shutdown period. Road blockades, sit-ins and demonstrations are also expected at different locations.

Reports from Chandigarh and surrounding areas indicate that police have strengthened security and placed additional checkpoints, particularly around the Chandigarh-Mohali border.

This could create difficulties for people travelling between Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and nearby Punjab towns.

Private vehicles may still be able to move through several areas, but commuters should not assume that every route will remain clear. The situation can vary depending on where demonstrations or barricades are located.

People with important appointments, examinations, hospital visits or intercity travel plans should allow additional time and check local traffic updates before leaving.

What About Trains During The Punjab Bandh?

Railway passengers also have reason to remain cautious.

The bandh call includes railway services among the forms of transport that organisers have sought to disrupt. The actual impact on individual train services can depend on local conditions, railway operations and whether protesters occupy or block railway tracks.

At the time of reporting, there is no basis to assume that every train operating through Punjab has been cancelled.

Passengers should therefore check their individual train status rather than relying on general social media messages claiming that all railway services have stopped.

This is particularly important for passengers travelling long distances through Punjab. Even when a train itself is operating, road access to or from a railway station may be affected by the bandh.

Travellers heading to stations in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and other major cities should consider local road conditions before beginning their journey.

Schools And Colleges Face Different Situations

Students and parents have received different messages depending on the type of educational institution.

The Federation of Private Schools and Associations of Punjab announced a holiday for private schools across the state on August 21, citing concerns about student and staff safety during the bandh.

Government schools, however, were reported to remain open following the state government’s position. This means students cannot assume that every school in Punjab is closed today.

Private colleges and schools in parts of the Chandigarh Tricity have also moved classes online or announced closures because of anticipated disruption.

The difference is important for parents. Students should follow the latest communication issued directly by their school or college rather than relying only on social media posts.

For examinations, students should also check messages from the examination authority or institution. A bandh does not automatically mean that every examination across the state has been cancelled or postponed.

Impact On Shops, Markets And Businesses

Commercial activity is also expected to be affected during the seven-hour shutdown.

The bandh organisers have appealed to businesses, shops and commercial establishments to remain closed between 7 am and 2 pm. Reports from different parts of Punjab have indicated that several shops were closed as the bandh began on Friday morning.

The extent of participation, however, is not necessarily uniform across the state.

Reports from Ludhiana indicated a mixed response in some areas, highlighting that the effect of a statewide bandh can differ from one city or market to another.

For small retailers, restaurants, street vendors and other local businesses, the main concern is the loss of trading hours.

Businesses that depend on morning footfall could experience a direct impact, particularly in areas where roads or markets are blocked. At the same time, essential establishments have been exempted from the shutdown.

Hospitals And Essential Services Are Exempt

The bandh call includes exemptions for essential services.

Organisers have said that hospitals, medicine shops and emergency services should remain operational. People travelling for urgent medical treatment have also been asked not to be stopped.

This means the shutdown is not intended to prevent access to emergency healthcare.

Patients with scheduled medical appointments should nevertheless contact hospitals or clinics before travelling if their visit is not urgent. Road conditions and availability of public transport can still affect the journey even when the healthcare facility itself remains open.

The same principle applies to pharmacies and other essential services. Their exemption does not necessarily mean that every road leading to them will remain completely free of disruption.

Chandigarh-Mohali Border And Security Arrangements

The Chandigarh-Mohali area is receiving particular attention because of its heavy daily movement between Punjab and Chandigarh.

Police have increased security at border points and deployed personnel in areas considered sensitive. Reports have also indicated additional checkpoints and preparations to manage demonstrations and traffic movement.

For office workers who normally travel from Mohali or other Punjab areas into Chandigarh, the morning commute could therefore take longer than usual.

People who can work remotely may find it easier to avoid unnecessary travel during the bandh period.

Those who must travel should leave earlier, carry identification where appropriate and follow instructions from traffic police and local authorities.

What Commuters Should Do Today

The safest approach is to treat the bandh as a localised disruption rather than assuming that the entire state will have identical conditions.

Check the status of buses and trains before starting a journey. If travelling by private vehicle, check whether the intended route has reported barricades or demonstrations.

Avoid approaching protest sites simply to record videos or observe the situation. A crowded demonstration can change quickly, and unnecessary movement around such areas can create additional risks.

Students should confirm whether their institution is open, closed or operating online. Employees should check with their workplace if their commute passes through areas affected by demonstrations.

Most importantly, emergency travel should not be delayed because of uncertainty created by social media rumours. Essential services have been specifically exempted from the bandh call.

Why The Punjab Bandh Matters

The August 21 shutdown is connected to a longstanding political and legal issue concerning Sikh prisoners and demands raised by Sikh organisations.

The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha has argued that prisoners who have completed their sentences should be released and has also sought parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara. Organisers have presented the bandh as a peaceful way of drawing public and government attention to these demands.

For the wider public, however, the immediate concern is practical. Transport interruptions, school closures, road blockades and reduced business activity can affect thousands of people who may not be directly involved in the protest.

The situation is therefore likely to remain closely watched until the scheduled 2 pm end of the bandh.

Key Takeaways

  • Punjab is observing a statewide bandh today, August 21, from 7 am to 2 pm.
  • The bandh has been called over demands concerning the release of Sikh prisoners and parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara.
  • Public transport, roads, markets and some educational institutions are expected to face disruption.
  • Hospitals, medicine shops and emergency services have been exempted, while commuters should check local conditions before travelling.

FAQs

What time is the Punjab bandh today?

The bandh is scheduled from 7 am to 2 pm on August 21, 2026.

Are schools closed in Punjab today?

There is no single answer for all schools. Private schools have been asked to remain closed, while government schools were reported to remain open. Students should follow the latest notice from their individual institution.

Will trains and buses operate during the Punjab bandh?

Bus and other public transport services are expected to face disruption. Railway services may also be affected in areas where demonstrations or blockades occur, but passengers should check the status of their specific train instead of assuming that all trains are cancelled.
