Chandigarh Rail Block: 442 Train Trips Affected From September 9

A 36-day rail block at Chandigarh railway station is set to disrupt train services from September 9 to October 15, 2026. The work will affect 442 train trips through cancellations, short terminations, short-originations, diversions and platform changes.

Chandigarh railway station to face 36-day traffic block

Passengers travelling through Chandigarh railway station will need to plan carefully as the Railways has scheduled a prolonged power and traffic block for infrastructure work. The disruption is linked to ongoing redevelopment at the station, including construction of a balance through roof and removal of girders from the existing foot overbridge.

The work has been divided into three phases, covering September 9 to 21, September 22 to October 3, and October 4 to 15. During this period, services will not simply stop altogether. Depending on the train and date, passengers may face cancellations, altered origins or destinations, changes in stoppages and revised platform arrangements.

The scale is substantial. According to details reported by The Indian Express, 442 train trips will be affected during the 36-day period. Several services that normally operate to or from Chandigarh will instead terminate or originate at Ambala.

Why Chandigarh trains are being affected

The railway block has been scheduled to allow construction and dismantling work to be carried out safely at the station.

One of the major activities is the construction of a balance through roof. The Railways will also remove girders associated with the foot overbridge. Such work requires power and traffic blocks because railway lines and overhead equipment around the working area cannot operate normally while heavy infrastructure work is underway.

The Chandigarh railway station is already undergoing a larger redevelopment project. Earlier this year, the Railways had introduced shorter traffic and overhead equipment blocks as part of the redevelopment work. The latest 36-day programme represents another major operational phase of the project.

For passengers, the important point is that the disruption will vary by train and date. A train that operates normally during one phase could have a different platform, origin or termination point during another.

Three phases of the Chandigarh rail block

The 36-day programme has been split into three 12-day phases.

The first phase runs from September 9 to September 21. The second phase begins on September 22 and continues through October 3. The final phase runs from October 4 to October 15.

This phased approach means passengers should not rely on a single general advisory for the entire period. The operational changes are different across phases.

According to the railway information reported by The Indian Express, 20 trains will have changes in berthing during the September 10 to 21 period. Another 17 trains will have revised berthing arrangements from September 22 to October 3. The largest number of platform changes is scheduled for the final phase, when 39 trains will have revised berthing arrangements.

Passengers travelling in October should therefore pay particular attention to platform information at Chandigarh.

Which trains will be cancelled or shifted?

A number of services will be directly affected by the Chandigarh railway station block.

Among the services identified in the railway schedule are the Chandigarh-Amritsar-Chandigarh Express and Chandigarh-Firozpur-Chandigarh Express. The Ambala-Kalka-Ambala passenger service is also listed among the affected services. Other services, including Ambala-Jalandhar City and Ambala-Daulatpur Chowk trains, are also scheduled for cancellation during specified periods.

The disruption is not limited to short-distance passenger services.

The Ramnagar-Chandigarh-Ramnagar service will be short-terminated and short-originated at Ambala on specified dates. The Ajmer-Chandigarh-Ajmer Garib Rath, train numbers 12983 and 12984, will also be short-terminated and short-originated at Ambala on specified dates.

The Udaipur-Chandigarh-Udaipur service, numbered 20989 and 20990, will also face operational changes, while the Agartala-Silchar Express is among other services affected by the wider programme.

Ambala becomes an important alternative station

One of the biggest practical changes for passengers will be the increased importance of Ambala.

Several trains that normally start or end at Chandigarh will instead originate or terminate at Ambala during parts of the block. This means passengers travelling to or from Chandigarh may need to complete the Chandigarh-Ambala portion of their journey by road or another available transport option.

This change could be particularly significant for passengers with advance bookings who are accustomed to reaching Chandigarh station directly.

Ambala is a major railway junction with extensive connectivity, so shifting train operations there allows the Railways to maintain some services while construction work continues at Chandigarh. However, passengers will need to factor in additional travel time and transportation costs between the two cities.

Those travelling with elderly family members, children or heavy luggage should account for the extra transfer while planning their journey.

Shatabdi trains will see platform changes

Passengers using the Chandigarh-New Delhi and Chandigarh-Kalka Shatabdi services will also need to pay attention to platform changes.

During the final phase from October 4 to October 15, the New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express, train number 12011, is scheduled to berth at Platform 5 instead of its usual Platform 1 at Chandigarh. The return Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, train number 12012, will move from Platform 1 to Platform 3.

Other Shatabdi services, including train numbers 12005 and 12006, will also have revised berthing arrangements during this period.

The change may sound minor, but platform changes can matter for passengers who arrive close to departure time, particularly at a busy station.

Railway authorities are advising passengers to rely on station announcements and display boards rather than assuming that their train will use its usual platform.

Mohali may provide temporary relief

The Railways has also planned temporary stops at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, commonly known as Mohali, for selected trains during the disruption.

The additional stoppages are intended to provide another option for passengers affected by changes at Chandigarh. However, these temporary stops apply only to selected services and should not be treated as a blanket replacement for Chandigarh station.

Passengers should therefore check their individual train number and travel date before making arrangements.

This is particularly important for people travelling from nearby districts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh who may use Chandigarh as their primary railway access point.

What passengers should check before travelling

The 36-day rail block makes last-minute verification especially important.

Passengers with tickets booked between September 9 and October 15 should check their train’s current running status and operational schedule before leaving for the station. The train may be cancelled, short-terminated, short-originated or assigned a different platform depending on the date.

Travellers should also check whether their train has received a temporary stoppage at Mohali or has been shifted to Ambala. These changes can alter the road travel required to complete the journey.

Passengers should not assume that an unchanged ticket automatically means an unchanged journey. Operational arrangements can change during prolonged railway construction work.

The safest approach is to check the latest information through official railway channels, station announcements and display boards close to the date of travel.

Chandigarh rail disruption comes alongside Kalka-Shimla cancellations

The Chandigarh region is also dealing with another railway disruption following heavy rainfall.

A culvert near Bridge No. 57 on the Kalka-Shimla railway section was washed away after heavy rain on August 30. As a result, several Kalka-Shimla services have been suspended. The Kalka-Shimla Passenger, Kalka-Shimla Express and Himalayan Queen were reported cancelled until September 11, while Shivalik Deluxe Express and another Kalka-Shimla Express service were cancelled until September 13.

The two disruptions have different causes. The Chandigarh station block is linked to planned infrastructure work, while the Kalka-Shimla suspension follows damage caused by heavy rain.

For passengers travelling through the wider Chandigarh-Kalka region, checking the latest train status is therefore particularly important in September.

What the rail block means for daily commuters

The disruption will affect more than long-distance travellers. Regular commuters who use Chandigarh, Ambala, Kalka and nearby stations may also experience changes in their usual routes.

Short-distance passenger services are among those affected, while several longer-distance trains will have changes to their origins, destinations or berthing arrangements.

For commuters, the main challenge will be adapting to a changing timetable rather than simply dealing with a one-time cancellation.

The Railways is carrying out the work as part of the station’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade. Once the scheduled construction and dismantling activities are completed, normal operations are expected to resume subject to the project’s progress and railway clearances.

Until then, passengers should treat September 9 to October 15 as a period requiring additional planning.

Key Takeaways
